About this event

DNA, Distribution, and Bears, Oh My: Grizzly bear monitoring in the Peace region

Open to anyone interested in science and our boreal backyards (no need to be a researcher or industry professional)! As part of the Boreal Nature Series, this talk features Dr. Courtney Hughes from Alberta Environment and Parks.

Refreshments and snack are provided.

*Please note, this event will be held in the Library (Learning Commons).

This talk will review the data collected by Alberta Environment and Parks on Grizzly Bear distribution in the Peace Region. This initiative uses a variety of DNA collection methods through AEP and citizen science initiatives to better understand grizzly bears in Alberta.

Courtney Hughes is the Senior Biodiversity and Landscape Specialist with Alberta Environment and Parks in Peace River. She has been working with the Grizzly Bear Project for a number of years, sharing knowledge and enthusiasm on various wildlife topics with the public through citizen science and public presentations.

We hope to see you there!

The Centre for Boreal Research is a leader in applied research developing scientifically based best practices and applied technologies to address present and emerging knowledge gaps in the management and reclamation of disturbed landscapes. With joint funding from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada and industry partners, the Centre for Boreal Research has established two Industrial Research Chairs for Colleges to advance research in boreal reclamation, reforestation and peatland restoration. The centre also hosts the Boreal Plant and Seed Technology Access Centre (TAC), focused on applied research and knowledge transfer of innovative technologies that facilitate the use of native species in reclamation. Our mission is to promote the informed use of boreal resources through applied science, education, and partnerships with industry, government agencies, practitioners, communities and academic partners.
